Index and status of patients registers, 1878-1940.

Currently under the supervision of the Dept. of Mental Health, Danvers State Hospital and its predecessors have been responsible for providing residential care and treatment of mentally ill persons in northeastern Massachusetts since 1878. Index and status of patient registers were created to provide both an alphabetical listing of inpatients and a summary of their status for the time period covered by the register.

The State Lunatic Hospital at Danvers, established in 1877, opened in 1878 as Danvers Lunatic Hospital. It was renamed Danvers Insane Hospital in 1898 and Danvers State Hospital in 1909.
